Rest For The Weary

Matthew 11:28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and heavy burdened and I will give you rest."

Do you find yourself always tired? Super stressed and unable to rest? Flat out exhausted? It may be a sign that you need some refreshing.

Our bodies have a way of alarming us when we are reaching our limit. It can come in the form of irritability, confusion, slight memory loss and much more. It's our custom to book a vacation and get away when we begin feeling this way. This is totally needed sometimes, and can be very helpful. However, it's important to note that there is a certain rest that cannot be provided by a vacation or a bubble bath.

True rest comes from time spent with Jesus Christ. In Matthew 11:27, Jesus mentions during a prayer that God has trusted everything to Him. Since God trusts Jesus with everything, we ought to trust Him with all of us too.

When we feel burdened with the cares of this world, placing those cares fully at the feet of Jesus can and will elevate those burdens. In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says that when you come to Him with your burdens, HE will give you rest. So often we go to friends, family, spouses, therapists etc. While having a circle of individuals to vent to is nice, do not expect rest from these avenues alone.

In verse 29, Jesus continues stating to “Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls." I love how Jesus assures us that he's gentle. I'm reminded that what we entrust Him with won't be mishandled. Our hearts, our cares, our souls are safe in His hands. When we put those things in His hands, He promises to give us rest for our souls.

Verse 30 reads "For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.A yoke is used on the shoulders of oxen. It relieves the pain and provides comfort. Two oxen fit in one yoke, a younger ox and an older, more experienced ox. The more experienced ox leads, guides and teaches the young ox the ways. The more seasoned ox also carries the majority of the weight. In essence, Jesus is telling us to get into his yoke and he will teach us the way, relieving the pressure off of us.

Galatians 6:9 teaches us to not be weary in well doing, for we shall reap a harvest if we don’t give up. Friend, don’t give up because of the pressures you face in this season. Remember that this too shall pass. Take everything on your heart, lay it at the feet of Jesus and leave it there. Put total trust in Him. He promises to feed you with rest. The type of rest that the world can't give & the world can't take away.

Philippians 4:7 reads “And then the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
